Rochester's baroque Ensemble

Listen

Listen to the power...

Monteverdi's setting of Gloria in excelsis draws great energy and power from the ensemble.

Listen to the lively dance rhythms...

The use of dance rhythms is very common in baroque music, and Publick Musick is light on its feet. This setting of the Magnificat by Italian composer Francesco Cavalli gives us an excuse to dance.

Listen to the melody...

A large ensemble is often challenged to allow the melody to emerge for the audience, so that the soul of a song is heard. Publick Musick does that with world-class soloists drawn from within the ensemble.

Listen to the sung rhythm of the text...

When Bach needed to provide some background text to move the story along, he would create a recitativo, which is a kind of sung speech. Publick Musick is lucky to have wonderful voices to deliver these movements.

Listen to the sound of an 18th century hymn...

Bach usually ends his cantatas with a setting of the hymn melody upon which the entire work is often based. We love to share the simple style of a hymn, knowing that this tradition is carried on in many of the churches of our own time.

Performance Practice

The concept of performance practice means playing music in the style and spirit in which it was intended. While applying this concept to the baroque masterworks -- of which we have no "original" recordings -- brings with it some challenges, it also keeps our work uniquely exciting.

Audience Interaction

Publick Musick delivers musical experiences that shatter any preconceived notions that baroque music all sounds the same.
